Welcome to the Perfect Avocado Book Club!
Updated: Nov 9, 2020
Yes Friends, we’ve hit upon a new way to connect with you about your thoughts and reflections - and just in time for winter, since it’s looking like we’ll be riding out 2020 with the pandemic. That means plenty of alone time to read, hopefully. Paraphrasing his famous quote on reading, I think Groucho Marx said it best, “Outside of a dog, a book is (wo)man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” Words to live by during the winter of our pandemic.
Amy and I are both avid readers. In reading, we are the same as in most areas of our lives - Amy reads super fast and I read at a more tortoise like pace. She’s probably forgotten the book by the time I’m finished! We’re attempting to accommodate both of us and all of you by having just one book a month as opposed to four at Amy’s speed of light reading pace.
The focus of our book group is women! What a surprise? Bet you were thinking...avocados? Seriously, by women, about women, women's stories, women’s memoirs, advice, etc. Plus essays, poetry, history - this is going to be fun!
We’re looking forward to exploring new reads with you - and we already have our first four books - WITH AUTHORS lined up!
Beginning in December with Tammy Lally and The Money Detox. Tammy share’s her own money journey so authentically in this book, and then writes about the turnarounds that her clients have experienced. Even though we regularly teach about uncovering your story, Tammy’s methods for getting under the surface of the money story are phenomenal. Watch her Ted Talk, then read the book with us and uncover your own money story.!
In January we’ll read The Island of Sea Women and then we have the incredible opportunity to discuss the story with the renown Lisa See. I most recently read Lisa’s masterful The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane and could not stop talking about it - the book, the story and the characters are transporting. I expect nothing less from The Island of Sea Women.
As with all of her books, you’ll find this book to be deeply researched and beautifully written. The book centers on the female divers in the Korean province of Jeju where they make a living through freediving and harvesting a variety of sea life from the ocean. I love that Lisa plucks this story about a relatively unknown population and brings them alive to me in such detail - and makes me care.
That’s all we’re telling you about now, but we already have two more authors booked for February and March that we think you will love! Stay tuned.
That’s how we’re hoping the book choices will shake out - a real assortment of women’s literature. Of course we welcome your suggestions, especially if you might have a woman author friend who has written an exceptional book!
Here’s how it works,
Each month we’ll announce the book and the book group meeting date on The Perfect Avocado Book Club webpage and in Weekend Wisdom.
You sign up and have the month to read the selection of the month.
Then we’ll come together for our virtual book club meeting. Whenever possible, we’ll have the author present - and we’ll all have the opportunity to pose your questions to the author herself.
During the course of your reading, you can post your questions in our GoodReads group.
We’ll be providing signed bookplates, so you’ll actually own a signed copy of the book selections!
So take a look and sign up! It’s free, it’s fun and you can celebrity crush on these awesome and inspiring women authors.
