January 2020 Book Group

I most recently read Ms. See’s masterful The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane and could not stop talking about it - the book, the story and the characters are transporting. 

If you know Amy in real life there is a very good chance she has recommended or gifted you Lisa See’s book Snow Flower and The Secret Fan which is Amy’s favorite book of all time! 

As with all of her books The Island of Sea Women is deeply researched and beautifully written. The story highlights the Haenyeo 해녀, female divers in the Korean province of Jeju whose livelihood consists of harvesting a variety of mollusks, seaweed, and other sea life from the ocean.They typically start when they are 11 years old and continue into their 80’s diving up to 30 meters deep and holding their breath for over three minutes!
